Plant, Grow, Eat!

For years now I’ve wanted to have my own vegetable garden. The thought of planting a seed and watching it grow, as it’s being nurtured, right before my eyes brings a satisfying feeling that words can’t describe. The nurturer in me seeks this fulfilling quest and enjoys the conquer like a delicious piece of yummy chocolate that’s savored on my tongue until completely devoured. (Smacking my tongue right now, lol).

Well, this year I was able to do just that with the guidance of my Dad, Mr. Farmer. He’s been growing his vegetable garden for years now. The past couple of years his garden has turned in to a farm. He’s growing, Tomato, Corn, Okra, Egg Plant, Watermelon, Peppers, Cabbage, Zucchini, Broccoli, Cucumber, and, Cauliflower. I’m sure I missed a vegetable or two. The other day I went over there with my grocery bag in hand and didn’t waste any time picking till my hearts delight. You can’t beat the taste of an organic vegetable grown with lots of care and love. In my modest beginning I decided to start with one vegetable plant to get my feet wet. Here are some pics of what we have so far.

Ripe for the picking!

We’ve learned that the key to growing Tomatoes is to keep them evenly moist at all times. We have five plants that have a total of 24 Tomatoes combined, and water them early in the morning and in the evening, twice a day. Sometimes we’ve missed watering them twice but always at least once. The kids have learned a lot from this project and are looking forward to growing many other vegetables next year. They have never once complained about the work it takes to maintain them and find pleasure in seeing their work blossom. They are also a part of the Gardening club at the library and have planted Flowers (White & Yellow Sunflowers, Perennials), Trees (A Dogwood and Crab-Apple Tree), and Vegetables (Tomatoes, Beans, Peas), just to name a few.

This green thumb runs throughout our family. My Mom loves planting flowers that beautify the outside of their home. She also has many plants and herbal plants growing on the inside. Our Aunt’s on both sides of our family also grow vegetables. One of our Aunt’s who resides in the V.I (Virgin Islands) has a booming farm business that produces many unique crops which she provides to her local grocers and community as well.

The truth is, for many people who plant, and nurture the earth there is a connection that is made. A connection made to something greater than themselves. There is a sense of preserving, giving back, and giving thanks. There is a sense of ownership and pride. This acknowledgment goes beyond the Earth just being the ground you walk on, it becomes a part of Life itself. I applaud those who “Go Green, become Eco Friendly and give back in anyway they can. This is by far not the only way so whatever way you are doing what you feel is your part, cheers to you!

What You Doing, Janie?

"I'm watching God..."

I finished reading "Their Eyes Were Watching God" last night and was sad to see it end. What an amazing read. I absolutely love the movie and watched it too many times to count so I had to get the book in order to fulfill a longing for more. More connection, conversations, feelings, gestures, glances, touch, and love. While reading I felt the bond between Janie and Tea Cake so much stronger. There were times while reading where I would just pause and linger on the sensations my body felt from reading different interactions between those two. When they made Love, I made Love, yes, it was that serious. Have you ever read a book that drew you in so deep that you felt you were the characters or that particular character you connected with? Did you experience, if even for a moment, life between their eyes?

In the movie, the phrase, "I'm watching God", was Janie's response to Tea Cake when he found her gazing upon the sky in wonderment. Janie is the kind of woman that was sensitive to the magnificaint creation of the world around her. She would lay up under trees, connect and become one with natures life cycle. Like the time she connected with something as simple as a honeybee and a pear tree. In her free spirit she was willing to explore, imagine, gather information from what may seem like meaningless things. The dance between the honeybee and the pear tree may have seemed insignificant but looking beyond the significant she saw a union between two that was inevitable. A force that is so present and strong in it's current that it could be felt if given the slightest acknowledgement. Sexuality in full bloom as the honeybee is drawn to the tree, becomes connected, gives life and takes life, a natural progression within us all.

Janie dreams constantly of love and being in that love she so wants to create. She's a woman who is easily tickled by herself with this overflowing fountain of joy that comes from deep within. This joy allows her to get through some of the toughest challenges that life brings her way, never completely robbing of it. Janie simply tucked it away deep inside of herself knowing one day they will dance again. She exiubarates strength, patience, kindness, long-lasting dedication and that's what assists her in finding and experiencing true love for herself. Janie is one bad ass women!

For me seeing the movie first did not spoil the book at all. If anything it only enhanced it. My only challenge was to look beyond the faces that where in the movie and create new ones for myself which opened up a whole new world of possible characters. It's a fact that whenever a movie is made from a book not everything is going to be the way it is. If you can open your mind to that and let it go you can find appreciation in both. That's the way I look at it.

The credit for this truly awesome book all goes to the Beautiful, Zora Neale Hurston

What’s In My Cup?!

300px-Moscato_d'Asti

For a long time a searched high and low for a wine that I could order over and over again with complete satisfaction every time. I believe I’ve found that drink, for now that is Winking smile Moscato D’Asti – Well known within Italy for it’s sweet, fresh and slightly spritzy taste that makes it very easy to drink. I’m not one for dry wines that leaves me wanting to gulp down a whole glass of water while trying to enjoy my drink! No thanks! I like it smooth, sweet and moist all the time.

What’s your favorite Wine?

The Hangover Part ll

I was sadly disappointed in this movie. After seeing the first one I was at least expecting to get some hearty laughs with a few tears in my eyes, but didn't get anything close!

Part one was great and I thought it was going to be difficult to follow, so I was very giving in knowing that. I can't tell you how
many times I looked away from the screen last night in embarrassment for the Actors involved. Really, I personally felt sorry for them, like if my sorrow made any difference in their paycheck, LOL!!! You ask, "Was it that bad?" Yes! Really, it was.

All of the reviews I read had my mouth watering to see this film. That's up until yesterday afternoon of course. I read my first negative review and was puzzled at how negative it was. I said to myself, "Nah, they don't know what they talking 'bout, lol. This movie is going to be goooood". Sadly, they were right on the money.

This is my opinion and I won't include any spoilers so check it out at your own will, you might love it!
